If I remember correctly, Madara hinted that he survived luckily, almost as if his body slipped through some of the rock.

He did. He said he "slipped away or through" the rock, which is why he wasn't completely crushed and survived.

That was the only thing that could make sense given that he got crushed by a boulder and magically survived as well.
