Its based on the 6 paths of life, in Buddhism. AKA 6 realms of reincarnation.

I believe it refers to the 6 realms where entities live and can be reincarnated into within Buddhism. We live in one - the Human realm. The others are the Deva (Benevolent Gods) realm, Asura (Jealous Gods) realm, Preta (hungry ghosts) realm, Naraka (Hell) realm, and Tiryagyoni (Animal) realm.

Attaining Enlightenment frees you from these realms and from the suffering that the entities within these realms all experience.

^^Exactly. These are also the names of Nagato's paths, indicating that they are referencing Buddhist mythology when saying "six paths".

What I'm most confused with Kishi using the 6 realms for the 6 paths is how the heck he decided to make one of them to be a puppet robot man...Makes no sense.
