What do you think is the most versatile affinity?

Personally im going with Water style jutsus because throughout the manga they've shown a well balanced array of techniques such as Water Prison, Rain Tiger at Will, etc.

For attack,
defense,
changing the terrain ,
traping your opponent inside prison,
confusing your opponent ( with hidden mist )
absorbing jutsu (Kisame´s Daikodan)

Water no contest.

In the manga? Probably lightning. Sasuke and A get pretty creative in how to use it.

But the most potential is water, as you said. There's nothing really stopping any ninja from standing on a chakra-compressed water platform and flying in a Gaara-esque manner. It can be steam, mist, dragons, bullets, rain and hydrification body parts.

I loved Pain's Rain sensing jutsu.

Im not to big on Wind Style Jutsus just seem real inconsistent and usually get beat out by other jutsus or is simply tanked (3rd Raikage)

I think lightning, because of the speed it has and what it can be done with a change in chakra form. I wish the way Sasuke used lightning was applied to fire instead, because he's an Uchiha.

All the Chidori variants were pretty awesome and Sasuke did kind of stray away from some of those techniques unfortunately but did itachi ever have a second affinity?

Gotta agree with the majority of you all. Water seems to be extremely versatile:

Mix it with lightning? You get Storm release
Fire? Steam release
Wind? ice release
Earth may be its weakness but mix with earth you get Mokuton....or mud if you're not Hashirama XD

I don't think the other elements have that kind of bond with all other elements.

Water is the most flexible and versatile element, yes. Because water can easly alter it's state and adept instantly to the combat situation, no matter if it's for defensive use or attacking. Though in the end it all depends on how creative the user can be.

Agreed. Water style has some pretty good feats compared to some of the other elements it even showcased some piercing abilities as well but i find odd that majority of the water style users are bad guys

If it is by a great and versatile user then i could be very dangerous and is sad how the main character only got to use it on his rasengans and not show its true potential

It couldve been real deadly since you can apply it to your weapons just like raiton but most wind users in the manga hardly got any love especially during battle either they're jutsu got hard countered (Sasuke agianst the Baku summon) or tanked (3rd Raikage)
