Orphaned at the age of three and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter (Michael C. Hall, Six Feet Under) was adopted by a Miami police officer named Harry Morgan (James Remar), who recognized Dexter's sociopathic tendencies and taught him to channel his gruesome passion for thrill killing by giving it a constructive direction: killing people who deserve it. Most have slipped through the justice system, due to loopholes and technicalities in the law or were never apprehended.

To hide in plain sight and to erase his own crimes, Dexter works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. Although his drive to kill is unflinching (otherwise overcome by a feeling of "emptiness") Dexter is, through extensive instruction from Harry, able to fake normal emotions and keep up his appearance as a socially-responsible human being. Flashbacks throughout the series show how Harry instructs Dexter on the art of appearing normal, and he follows Harry's instructions as a sacred "Code of Harry." In accordance with this code, most of Dexter's victims must be killers themselves (though there has also been mention of arsonists, and child molesters), who have killed multiple times with no remorse, and Dexter must have proof that they are definitely guilty before he takes action. In the episode "Return to Sender", Dexter is shown to have used the email alias "Patrick Bateman" to disguise his actions. This is the same name used by Bret Easton Ellis for the serial killer in his 1991 novel American Psycho (as well as the 2000 film of the same name), who has the same modus operandi as Dexter, a seemingly normal businessman by day but a ruthless, sociopathic serial killer by night

Apologies in advance for perpetuating an overused pun, but Dexter's fourth season sounds, well, killer.

When the Showtime hit returns next fall, six months will have lapsed on screen, leaving newlyweds Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Rita (Julie Benz) the proud parents of a baby boy. "This season, we're going to deal with: Can a serial killer juggle a personal life, work, and his 'dark passenger'?" reveals executive producer Sara Colleton. "In other words, can Dexter have it all? Which is something all of us grapple with every day of our lives. So we're taking something that is a very human dilemma and putting it through the prism of Dexter's special needs."

Further complicating Dexter's intricate balancing act will be a new, as-yet-uncast male antagonist who will "cross paths with Dexter in a major, dramatic way," teases Colleton. "He will illuminate a lot about Dexter's life and force him to make some tough choices." (Word is they're looking for a "Jeff Daniels-type" to play the role.)

Meanwhile, Dex's plucky sister, Deb (played by Hall's real-life wife, Jennifer Carpenter), will unwittingly threaten to shed light on his dark secret. "All the way through the season, Deb -- in her need to know her father more -- is going to get closer and closer to figuring out who Dexter's mother was and her relationship with her father," says Colleton. So might the day come when Dex is forced to slice and dice her? "That is inconceivable to me," declares Colleton. "Deb and Dexter are the best brother-and-sister team ever." One could even call them...killer. (Sorry again!)

This show is a spectacular viewing experience. Dexter a man with an invisible mask over his life from a young age saw a life changing moment that made him forget anything that happened before hand. This man now lives by a code that his father taught him to follow. This code is used to feed his need to kill but to clean up the filth.

Ah... I love this show. As much as it's different I think burn notice is another show that is great for anyone that loved this one, but yes this show is awesome. I just restarted watching it on a website, but i'd rather give it the whole pirate's welcome and put it on my external. Hope it's great quality.
