Why do so many people see Orochimaru as such a great villain? I am not trying to bash the guy, but I judge villains by 3 things:
1. Power
2. Feats
3. Their successes in the processes of achieving their goals.
Now I am mainly going to talk about number 3:
In order to analyze this, we must first ask ourselves: What are Orochimaru's goals? Then we must ask: How did things turn out for them?
Well...
1. Immortality: This was one of Orochimaru's goals. He has achieved it in a sense, but he has to keep going from body to body in order to use it. Furthermore, when one body is damaged or about to expire, he becomes all sickly and goes into a critical condition. He often times even needed Kabuto's aid to help him make the transfer. It is also possible for someone to menatally overpower him when he is trying to transfer (like what Sasuke did), thus meaning that the technique is not even fool proof. After he makes a transfer, he can't transfer again for another 3 years (so if he gets a weak body then he is out of luck for 3 years). There is also no guarantee that he could beat his opponent and forcibly take their body. As for his revival through curse seals, he needs someone to revive him for that. Therefore it is too dependant. Conclusion: This is a very dangerous and imperfect method of immortality. A true immortal person would not have to switch bodies. They'd be like Hidan, but preferably with more durability so that they are not decapitated so easily.
Status of this goal: Slight success, but mostly fail.
2. Obtain a sharingan/ Uchiha body: Status: Fail. This one needs no explanation.
3. Destroy Konoha. Status: Failed and eventually abandoned
4. Learn every jutsu in the world: Status: Fail. He obviously can't use every jutsu in the world.
5. Get the sword of totsuka: Status: Fail. He tried to get this during the battle between Sasuke and Itachi. We all know what happened then.
6. Obtain sage mode: Status: Partial success, but mostly fail. He learned how to get senjutsu chakara, but he could not actually use sage mode. He could only give it to people through curse seals and take it away like he did with Kabuto.
Do you guys see all of Orochimaru's fails? He is great at studying stuff and being a scientist, but he can never capitalize on his goals. Heck, he has actually done more good than he has evil. For instance, he revived the edo hokages and that significantly helped the war. He gave Sasuke the curse mark, which allowed Sasuke to defeat Deidara (an s-rank criminal), save the Konoha 11 from that sound ninja in the forest of death and even save himself. Kabuto was better as a villain than Orochimaru. Heck, he couldn't even beat Hiruzen without being crippled for 3 years.
Now lets compare him to Obito and Madara.
Obito:
1. Capture the bijuus, revive the juubi and become its jinchuuriki: Status: success
2. Get rinnegan from Nagato's corpse: status: success
3. Destroy Konoha: status: success and fail at the same time. He destroyed it both with Kurama and with Pain's attack, but Konoha rebuilt.
4. Activate infinite tsukuyomi: Status: Fail, but this was the last part. The villains are supposed to fail at the last part unless it is one of those sad ending types of stories.
Madara:
1. Crush Konoha: Fail
2. Awaken rinnegan and pave the way for a successor to work on eye of the moon plan: success
3. Get revived: success
4. Defeat Hashirama: success
5. Avenge Izuna: success (because he defeated Tobirama)
6. Capture all bijuus and become the juubi's jinchuuriki: success
