What do we really know about Zetsu?

Zetsu is a very mysterious figure that has connections all over the place. Could someone help me figure out what we know for sure about him/it's history and abilities beyond sensory?

I know he is in league with Tobi but beyond that i am confused. Does he have the first hokages cells or was the first hokage's cells used for the Zetsu army and not the creation of the initial thing itself? Please enlighten me, I would greatly appreciate it.

I think just for the army... His white half can be reproduced by an outside chakra source, and he's one with nature... That's all I've got

He's useful for shinobis to test out their new jutsu aka like sasuke did when he escaped from tobis hideout and a great punching bag too also he's useful in making sakura seem useful for once as seen when she noticed something odd about neji i i i mean zetsu and elbowed him to the ground rendering that zetsu clone immobile while she does a post mortem on it to find out why zetsu is a waste of hashiramas dna.
