The thing is HE BARELY GOT SCREENTIME BARELY!!!!! Doctor boyer had more HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAH
First off, Monster was 74 episodes long and Johan had about 18 episodes worth of screen time, if you do the math. Now what other great anime characters didn't get as much screen time as him?
- L (Death Note)
- Alucard (Hellsing)
- Most of the Evangelion cast
- Most of the Cowboy Bebop cast
- Everyone in Baccano! and Madoka Magica
Screen time does nothing to take away from a character's impact and legacy. I mentioned Hannibal before, but I forgot to mention that out of those two hours of film he had only 16 minutes (and the sequels and TV series were only made possible by Anthony Hopkins' performance in that first film, so don't justify your reasoning by citing those). Johan had a Voldemort-esque presence in Monster where even his name being mentioned created a grim atmosphere and the times he was actually present were the best parts of the entire show. What other anime character had an effect like that, in history?
And by the way, if you saw Captain America: Civil War already,
Spider-man had only two scenes, but those two scenes told you everything you needed to know about the kind of character he was gonna turn out to be. That's what makes a great character - not the time you give them, but what you do during that time.
So no, the minimal screen time argument is head-scratching at best.
