I think this is one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. It didn't evolve around fighting, but still delivered, had a very deep message and explored Luffys personality in certain areas that the manga never has before. The plot was very mysterious as well, I had to watch it 2 times to get it and a 3rd time just because I liked it, and had unique characters.

Also the actual art style looked waaaay ahead of the art style at the time, shown on the cover above. The animation was excellent. Over all I'd say this is really the most... different movie in all aspects from the other One Piece movies. Loved it.

Ohh i'm glad you like it, KingSmoke! I thought i was the only one. But to tell ya the truth, after i watched it twice, i couldn't brave myself to watch it again, for now, eventhough I LIKE IT A LOT. Here's why:

  • The Strawhats had a nonsense quarrel among them (wait, please read the whole comment ), which was a very out of their characters and a very unusual one compared to their other friendly fights before. When they began to realise a few of their nakama went missing, normally they searched for them immediately, right? But in that movie, they rushed to blame one another instead, heck, at the worst part, Sanji even put all the blame on Luffy, his captain, while Zoro, the most loyal crew to Luffy, didn't bother to deny it. Did you see how Luffy react to it? He looked so confused and sad. It was up to this point that i too, noticed there was something wrong with the Island, and the Baron guy. They wanted to break Strawhats' strong bond, and in the end, they successfully did, while Luffy paid the biggest price.
  • As much as i hate Baron for breaking up all the Strawhats and got them fought each other, i couldn't fully dislike him as the story ended, because he became like that due to his loneliness for losing all his deceased nakama in one night -courtesy of a violent storm on the sea-. He was so jealous over Strawhats' friendship and their happiness for being together.
  • Luffy (i'm sorry, this is a spoiler...but...) got stabbed by millions of arrows when he tried to save his nakama...I cringe when i watched that harsh fight.
  • It was the most deepest and saddest OP movie but these elements were not shown much noticeable throughout the story, idk why. Most viewers didn't note them.
  • My heart wouldn't stop from aching everytime i saw that movie. Too much feels for the Strawhats (Luffy, specifically). And maybe for Baron as well. Mixed up feelings. :'(
Brilliant points in the movie:
  • Unique art design
  • Amazing story plot
  • Creative animated scene transitions
  • Deep tragedy for Strawhats and the villain in term of friendship
  • Comedy element is praise-worthy
  • Hidden messages are plenty
Just one thing...The ending is making me torn into half (yes, and it maybe forever).. Because:
Lastly, all the Strawhats except Luffy didn't even remember what had happened to them in that island, including their crazy fights towards one another, Luffy's great struggles, Sanji's one-sided blame on Luffy for their misfortune, and almost everything. Yet, Luffy didn't care, and he simply brushed it off by smiling satisfactorily to have his precious nakama back. I cried.

My best suggestion to give this movie a try. About the art, you'll grow to like it throughout the story. You have to detect the slight offbeat of the event transpired, or else, you perhaps couldn't understand the objective of the movie.

I think it's the third best movie of these movies..
But that's also kind of because the standard up until that point wasn't very good.

The movie had some FANTASTIC ideas, but unfortunately failed to utilize them probably.

The idea of the straw hats landing on a island that is designed to manipulate them and play them up against each other, was a great idea.
It was just a shame it wasn't empathised more, made more clear it was in fact the island itself trying to set the straw hat up against each other, and then have the solution not to be Luffy soloing ones again, but the straw hats finding back together and forgive each other to make a collected stand as a group.
That would have been a far more satiesfying conclusion to this honestly good idea.. but because the movie suddenly forgot about all of this and just got rid of them, their previous fights ends up just being meaingless and kind of there.

I would have loved it if it was a bit more obvious that that is what the island itself is trying to do, perhaps one of the inmates could whisper to Usopp that they heard the others call him a coward behind his back, which would make him sad and angry and then confront some-one else, whom would also be manipulated by the island and go on.
Until they all figure out they have been played because some on at the island goes to far and the straw hats realises that NONE in their crew would behave like that.

I would have loved to see that movie, where that idea is actually utilized to its fullest.

It's a good idea of how to involve more strawhats into the plot, not just Luffy and make it about them, but ones again, the movie seems to forget all of this mid way through and thusly there is no resolve to it, therefore their fights seems pointless and even kind of hurtful.

There's some good action scenes in there, I like some of their alternative outfitts and Luffys final fight is pretty badass.
All though, this time it just makes me wonder just how great the movie could have been if the good ideas had been fully utilized and explored.

Great potential, sadly, it never lived up to its own potential.
