Before they became part of team 7,they spent years growing up in the academy together,being aware of one another,Naruto and Sasuke were rivals,Sakura liked Sasuke,and Naruto liked Sakura.At the beginning of the story,we even see them sitting right next to each other in class.And from a flash back of a few years earlier,Masashi showed Naruto Vs Sasuke during the comrade lesson,with Sakura cheering Sasuke on.

When they were teamed up with each other,they became comrades,teamates,and friends.They spent alot of time together,going on missions,training,fighting in life and death battles,saving each others lives,etc.It wasn't necessary for them to be shown hanging out in the village for us to know they were close.

We haven't seen every moment of the time they spent together,for example.They went on many missions,but we only saw 1 important one,while other smaller missions were skipped.Like on the page below,we see them about to go out on a mission,

Its call time management they need time so they have enough episodes of the mini series before they can the mini cartoons. Animation world works on the same concept as TV Series world dose. Thats why you look at re runs till the new episodes show up.
