Well, if you ask me, they were partying a lot of the time. It was more of a vacation than a training journey. Maybe Jiraiya got Naruto laid like a good godfather would do.

From what we seen from Jiraiya alot of his higher end moves requires Sage mode. Naruto had to learn that elsewhere. And he did. I would say Jiraiya succeeded in making Naruto stronger and getting him ready for sage mode. Which if you have already forgotten easily kept up with MS sasuke, Took out 5 of the 6 paths, and not to mention the tank ( 3rd Raikage)

You know why? That's because Minato wanted Naruto to learn Bijuu Dama, so he entrusted everything to Jiraiya to teach him the Rasengan. In other words, it would be hard for Naruto to learn Bijuu Dama alone even he was able to control Yang-Kurama. Rasengan is just a hint to control Kurama and how to use Bijuu Dama. Re-read the manga again and you know... Read where Jiraiya talked to the frog before he died against Pain.
