Even after the end of the manga I'm not completely sure about what he was talking about. I never thought he meant they would literally die, and as we all know, that wasn't the case anyway.

Was he referring to Indra and Ashura? But then again...he didn't know about them at that time, he just knew there was something deeper inside of Sasuke.

I doubt Kishimoto put that in for no reason, what do you guys think?

He thought if they fight again for real they would both die.Naruto in the last battle wasn't fighting to kill.And still both nearly died.

Meh, towards the end I kind of just went along with the ride not really taking time to reread or analyze anything. So humor me, what did he mean?

He meant that in their currenf situation if things went the way they were going eventually Sasuke will come with all his hatrad and no one but Naruto would be able to shoulder that so he will. Since Sasuke will attack leaf Naruto would go all put to protect leaf and having to kill Sasuke he(Sasuke) wont die alone because since ther are friends Naruto will die with him shouldering his hatrad. That was the only outcome of their current situation at that moment. Naruto is making a sacrifice there with the whole going down w/his friend thing and to death stuff.
