The egg came first, for all intents and purposes. Egg-laying species predate the existance of chickens, so therefore the egg came first because there weren't any chickens around beforehand to lay said eggs.

This is further explained by the fact that the first "chicken" was produced via the germ-line cells of some other simillar animal through genetic recombination. It wasn't as if a species of bird or something gradually evolved/changed into a chicken over time.
