What broke the bond between Madara and Hashirama?

I've been reading the manga like I normally do and to see that Madara and Hashirama had such an unbreakable bond I was wondering what the hell broke them up?I think it was Mito. I think Madara fell for Mito but Mito fell for Hashirama therefore Madara swore vengeance on hashirama and the leaf.
