As someone that has yet To become an avid book fanatic, you're better off trying to pick books with fictional storylines that suit Your interest. If you're Just going to Read books to boost knowledge you'll get bored rather quickly as you're not used to reading a lot. You need to Be able to become immersed in reading First.

If you want to read a real book try Harry Potter for just improving english or a best seller like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code for many infos. A human hystory book or one about geographic discoveries can be useful too.
