What anime did you expect to suck, but turned out really good?

I admit for Fairy Tail - that I was skeptical of its name but after first episode, I knew its shounen element and was instantly hooked.

I think, there are many animes in many ways that turn better than my expectations. That being said, I have rarely started an anime with high expectations. Usually, I choose my animes pretty carefully. But 2 animes do come to my mind:

1. NANA - Initially, I thought it was some yuri romance like they usually churn out for fanservice. Which was completely bullshit. It's one of the most beautiful animes I've watched and arguably, one that is among my top favorites (till date) and that I rank very high - with its mature romance approach, its steady heartouching plot and the musical approach. Without, a shred of doubt, my favorite Musical Anime, and also probably, my favorite Romance anime.

2. 5Ds - Well, it's not like I did knew what it was about. But after the downfall that GX brought in Yu-Gi-Oh! series, I was highly skeptical to start 5Ds. But gotta admit that 5Ds is among the best that Yu-Gi-Oh! series has produced along with Duel Monsters. Even if I still prefer Original DM as my favorite due to mainly nostalgia factor, I can't deny that on several aspects, 5Ds tops it.

Well this is manga, but Onanie Master Kurosawa. The title means ''Masturbation Master Kurosawa'', knowing this you just have to be skeptical of it, like really manga about fapping? But thank god I finished reading this, it's sweet, sad and inspirational manga and you can most likely relate to some of the characters.

Hunter X Hunter - I thought it was just gonna be another one of those lame shounen types. But once they introduced Killua I became much more interested in it. I soon realized it was much darker than most other shounen anime.

Tengen Toppa.: I didn't expect much out of it, considering it went with the avant garde type of animation, yet it turned out pretty ok!
