1. Was he around 7 years old? He was 8 years old when Itachi killed off the clan, right?

2. Also, have the criteria to be accepted into the academy been established? If so, what are they, roughly?

3. It seems like a bit of a stretch that Sasuke took 4 or 5 years to become a Genin. Wasn't he supposedly a genius compared to his classmates? Wasn't he always ranked #1 in the entire academy? Surely he would have passed the Genin exam much sooner than 12 years old.

4. And that raises another question - did the 3rd Hokage keep him in the academy just for the sake of keeping him safe or analyzing his behavior after the Uchiha clan massacre? It seems plausible to me. I think Sasuke would have had the skills to graduate and become a Genin sooner than the age of 12. After all, when Team 7 set out for their first mission outside of the village, he made those Chunin that ambushed them look a bit silly, and he was fresh out of the academy, more or less.

Keep in mind that Obito graduated from the academy around the age of 9, if I'm not mistaken. Obito was by no means an extraordinary ninja compared to the likes of Kakashi, who graduated at age 5, and yet even he (Obito) graduated much sooner than Sasuke. What gives?

keep in mind that Kakashi and Obito grew up in times of war and shit, they were pretty much forced to grow up

Because he couldn't. Hiruzen most likely kept him there for protection since he promised Itachi. And it wasn't necessary to graduate him early they was at peace unlike Kakashi and co.
