The legal side of a divorce can be torrid, especially for men given that the legal system favours women in Western countries. To improve one's chance of having a clean divorce, I would recommend making sure that you have the same lawyer as your spouse. That way, you don't have 2 different guys trying to get money off both of you in a tug of war, because more often than not, there's only one result in a legal fight involving the 2 genders.
