I thought Tobi was Madara but no it's Obito. I thought it was Izuna. We knew nothing about Madara before his appearance, just that he fought with The First Hokage, Hashirama. Did you expect these sudden turn of events? Honestly I doubt anyone foreseen Madara being overpowered.

Wow,this is really old news but yes I was expecting Madara to be in the coffin or to be dead ever since Obito said he was him.
Also Madara is only overpowered since he's still a edo,so his chakra is unlimited and he is able to use the rinn full power.

what i didnt expect was the using of reanimation later in shippuden. i thought it was introduced in pre timeskip and be a one hit wonder that was never going to be visited again.
