Particularly Mokuton and Shakuton
If you look at the KG, they started and finished with physical elements (obviously) but the connection was symbolism
Like, Water and Wind producing Ice. Water is cold, wind is motion -> energy. Cold being a lack of energy. So water that has its energy taken away becomes Ice . . . Hence why Ice Release has the added effect of even cooling the surrounding environment.
Again, with Explosion Release. Earth is solid, containment, while Lightning is potency. So potency contained . . . Eventually bursts out in explosion.
Another case, with Earth and Wind making Magnet Release. Earth is matter, that which exists, Wind is energy as already said. So their combo will be energy over matter, the ability to make it move. Hence Magnet Release, which connects one's energy (chakra) to various elements to make them move as desired.
Point made?
However, there's a vreak from this rule on two occasions (involving three elements)
The first is that of Earth plus Water
This is commonly understood to be mokuton, since irl they do indeed produce trees. However, as pure elements they don't have such nutritious quality (earth is pure sand, silt and clay) as to produce life. In the world of Naruto, they should simply be Ice or somesuch.
So what happened? Well, Hashirama is not normal. He has a life force, that famous life force. So living element arises because he adds, automatically, life force to his techniques. So when you combine earth and water and life force, that's when you get trees, living elements.
Otherwise? You get Crystal Release, which is semi-canon since it was the author who designed that anime character. Crystals are solid, like earth. They are easily shaped, like water. Also like water, they are see through-ish. So it fits that a combo of those two produce an element that can be shaped with ease yet carries solid qualities that are susceptible to falling apart.
The second is with Fire and Wind
There's nothing symbolic since it really amounts to fire that has been thinned out, literally creating a fire that is less potent but more spread out.
Symbolically, Wind is a moving energy while Fire is a consuming energy, so their combo should be something like Radiation, which moves into and consumes anything. It could also be that power that Fire Storm (DC) has to change the molecular structure of things, since heat and kinetic energy are the two types mostly involved in that business. Perhaps an ability to remold chakra that has already been used, symbolically being the manipulation (wind) of energy (fire). I can see how melting and evaporating stuff futs as well, its just not complete.

I suppose if Hashirama were to have any other Kekkei Genkai, it would also be different, able to produce life forms associated with those elements. I just can't think of any
I also thought Swift Release would fit for Fire and Wind, but now I think it would be better for Wind and Lightning
Adding in ll three energy elements (Wind, Fire and Lightning), should create a Kekkei Tota of Energy Release, that allows for light flashes (like Flash Pillar), sound waves (like White Rage), Pressure Waves (like a softer version of Shinra Tensei) and such
Yeah, I suppose Mokuton is actually a Kekkei Tota, with Yang Release being the third element
