Were most of the Uchiha fodder ninja?

I never really understood how a clan with such a huge advantage over every other clan ended up being pushed over by Konoha. The Uchiha should've been able to stomp every other village with abilities like Amaterasu, Susano'o, etc. Perhaps only the few Uchihas crucial to the story (Itachi, Madara, Sasuke, Shisui, etc) were ever really extraordinary. Am I missing something here?

They were wiped out in the middle of the night, they were blindsided by Itachi and Tobi. Sasuke's father and mother were known to be extraordinary and of course, unnamed Uchiha were probably fodder, but in the past Itachi's story revealed there were many powerful Uchiha who had the Mangekyou Sharingan who tried to kill off their kinfolk for the Eternal Mangekyou and thus killed each other. So their clan dwindled down and was doomed either way.
