Was there a infinite Tsukuyomi in the past?

It's kinda bothering me. In the past the god tree only produced a fruit, and now in place of the fruit there's an eye.... I mean what was the eye even for anyway? Why didn't it just cast IF to deal with SO6P instead of producing a fruit and let a human eat it?
