no. He was someone who heard about the sage and admired him. The sage was born at least 300-500 years before current events(more likely 1000 years(since we heard the story about the fruit, and that seems like foreshadowing to me))

So he may be a disciple, to the remains of the sages followers, but he never knew the sage.
