Was SO6P friends with Juubi?

I find it odd that the SO6P could draw on the power of the Juubi without being controlled by it, so I was thinking could the Sage have been friends with the Juubi just like Naruto/Kurama?

If not, then maybe the Sage already possessed the Rinnegan and subjugated it that way?

If i remember right the tail beasts said naruto reminded them of the sage, so their personalities would be similar meaning that the sage would have eventually made friends witht the ten tails :/
but he didnt have the rinengan eyes before he seeled it.
