You're right on the orphan status...but the Hokage part wasn't revealed until the war arc either.

The Hokage part was revealed during one of Obito's flashbacks, when Kakashi is recalling the old Obito, the one he knew. It was revealed in Volume 63.

Yes, really.

Kakashi Gaiden was covered in volume 27 of the manga. Obito is revealed to be Tobi and Kakashi has some flashbacks of him when they were kids (which is where the scene of him saying he wants to be Hokage is shown) in volume 63.
