I think the reason that Obito was always so fascinated with Naruto was because he was supposed to be his generations version of Ashura/Naruto.
He was a little flaky, Rinn and Kakashi always had to keep him on task. Friendship and loyalty were important to him. He wanted to be Hokage as much as Naruto did. I think in his generation Obito and Kakashi were supposed to be the sons.
Before Obito caused Kakashi to lose his eye, Kakashi was his generations genius who kept to himself and took his abilities for granted kind of like Sasuke. He didn't really give any thoughts to his comrades and thought he was better than them.
Because of his father's background, he felt it more important to complete the mission than rescue Rinn. Until Obito TNJ'd him about Rinn he wasn't going to bother to help rescue her. Obito's words and actions changed Kakashi. He was not a team player before then. It wasn't until Obito's accident that Kakashi realized that teamwork, team mates and friends were important.
I think he felt a connection to Naruto because he was supposed to have been Ashura but circumstances changed his path. He had many opportunities where he could have killed Naruto and he did not. He wanted to win Naruto over not kill him.
