What bothers me even more than his death is his wasted potential.

It was his duty to protect Hinata so of course they needed to make his death develop in that direction. But they could have had him fighting against some big boss at least and have him go out with a larger impression. It seemed too shallow, like they needed him to die but didn't want to spend time or effort on making it super memorable. Neji was one of my favourite characters and have him go like that was quite disappointing.

It was a NaruHina paring device, I sure around the time the Last was in the works and Neji would cause to much conflict to the plot.
For one Neji wouldn't be outshined by Hinata. Hinata wouldn't get any development

His death was indeed a waste but it was a meaningful one, to some extent.
The thing that could have made his death more effective should have been meeting his reanimated father during the war.
