was naruto stupid or just desperate for friends

I'm wondering because in the beginning naruto was treated like crap by almost everyone of his peers in the show. He considers sasuke as his closest friend but all sasuke did was pretty much put him down and called him annoying, stupid ect. sakura always hit him and told him shut up all the time even when he was being nice to her. But he loves her?

I mean seriously no else treated him any better, neji said he was born to fail and the other guys just called him annoying also. I know naruto was kind of a lou-mouth know it all back then but they really didn't treat him as a friend. Was he just desperate, so he called anyone who were willingly to speak to him his "friend" or was he just stupid? Kiba, rock lee and hintata were the only ones who treated him as a friend in the show. They were the only ones I can remember that didn't insult or hit him but he rarely even speaks to them though.

Good to see thAT someone else noticed that Kiba was the first and nearly only person to cheer naruto on in the Chuunin exams, even after naruto beat him.

I don't think naruto is stupid, after the way people treated him, the other characters even talking to him or spending time around him would have seemed amazing to him. If he didn't call them friends and continue to try and further and strengthen their bonds with him he would have slipped straight back to where he was - alone with no one to talk to.

Well in a couple of flash-backs he was hanging out with shika and chouji..so the only ones that were mean to him were the stupid ones(sakura,ino) and the arrogant(sasuke,neji)...i mean from the kids.

He calls sasuke his closest friend because dispite the fact that he called him annoying and such he was the first to acknowledge his existence as a shinobi and a rival

Naruto wasn't hated by the people in his age group. The people in his age group just thought he was stupid and annoying.. expect Hinata. The older people that knew about the Nine-Tails attacking the village hated him. Those people lost friends and family.

Edit: Neji didn't hate Naruto btw. Naruto never met Neji until the Chunin Exams.
