Was Naruto ever actually really good or were we fooling ourselves?

As a series, was Naruto ever a great manga/anime or were we just too hyped to see that it was mediocre?

It's pretty damn good, but it's certainly not the best. That's why on a scale to 1-10, I put it at 7-8 range.

Yeah, reread part one. The art might be lacking up until the end, but man. The plot and tensions were high and great. It was pretty good in Shippuden, up until around the war started. But the manga started slipping past the death of Nagato.

It used to be amazing. It all started going downhill like 10 chapters into the war IMO. The war had the set up to be amazingly, breathtakingly phenomenal but it was just one disappointment after another for me. It has its highs and lows but it's been mostly subpar for me.

The manga is close to 700 chapters, and has produced an anime and several movies, along with video games and various other merchandise.

A manga that isn't good doesn't do that.

I know it's not consistently good so i usually give it a 6-10 score or call it mediocre. I have seen less cliche story lines characters and better written romantic pairings aswell as much nicer choreographed fights than this series so I don't think to highly of it.

Is say there many series out there that are better overall than Naruto.

Exactly this. Kishi took on too much when he planned for a war that included every character that's ever been introduced in the manga, and more.
