Was he actually ambitious or did he only get that strong because of the powerful shinobi he was perusing? I'm looking for manga scans that explain as well.

Did Kiba become sronger because of his rivalry with Naruto? You know the answer right.
Coming to OP, Naruto was destined to become stronger, his rivalry with Sasuke only played the role of a catalyst.

Naruto wanted to be acknowledged, but Sasuke was the emblem of that acknowledgement for him. Being Hokage was tied to being as acknowledged as Sasuke was - and being acknowledged by him. You can't really separate the two.

He only became strong to compete with sasuke and for fear of the akatsuki.

Naruto doesn't apply himself independently he always waits for a teacher to show up and help him or a threat to push him to focus. There are numerous examples.

-In his early years instead of training he wasted time playing pranks

-In shippuden instead of trying to learn new jutsu himself he only focused on what jiraya taught him which was mostly a poor method of controlling the kyuubi's chakra. He only realised how weak he was when sasuke embarrassed him.

- Again after the kakuzu arc(after his arm healed) he made no attempt to improve the FRS or develop a new jutsu he just waited till fukusaku came to train him. Luckily while training he decided to improve FRS.

- While training to use the 9 tails chakra again he had to rely on a teacher(bee) he couldn't do it himself.

Naruto never lacked talent, he is actually full of talent that's why he learns so quickly. His failures are due to his lack of independence and consistent focus in his training.

One more question relating to what you just said, how strong do you think Naruto would have been without Sasuke? I'm not sure about part one but think everything he did in shippuden training wise was only to compete with sasuke. Maybe what orochimaru said at the bridge cut him deep

His main goal was to become Hokage, but he was certainly fueled by his rivalry with Sasuke and other events that happened in the manga such as his grudge with Neji or the fact that he realized how fighting to protect others was what made you strong as shown against Gaara.

Without sasuke naruto would have never made it far. Sasuke was his main goal besides being hokage. Naruto only trains extensively when his life is at risk or to compete against sasuke and even then he needs a guide.

Pretty much. Main goal was to become Hokage, not just a Hokage, but the strongest Hokage.
His rivalry with Sasuke played a part, and vice versa.
Naruto is what ultimately pushed Sasuke to go to Oro to become stronger.

Honestly I think he would have been fine if he had to give up all his powers at the end for peace and acceptance. He cared more about those things and that's what drove him

Think of Sauce as extra motivation.....I don't understand how you even came to think that him getting stronger was ALL about sauce.
