Why did minato let Ay and B run away? Was that usually what he did? Ay had many encounters with Minato and spoke of him with reverence, but how did Ay survive all those fights? Did minato always let him go or did they sometimes have the upper hand?

Actually Minato had gotten a signal to retreat, more than likely because his help was more needed elsewhere than there as it wasn't really a necessary battle for him. With Obito, Obito shot out on Minato and Minato realized he still had the fox to take care of. After realizing Obito was still a problem, he sacrificed his life to get rid of the fox and turn his son into a jinchuuriki.
That by no means is a coward my friend, you're looking at this the wrong way.

Yes he had.....He fought Ay and Bee Many times and did defeated them said by Ay,He defeated Obito who is completly invisible within 2-3 shots without geting a single scratch on him and managed to stop Kyubi from attacking the village even if he run out of juice......
