Was Madara Smart or just simply had a lot of Prep time?

He thought long enough, to make even the mistakes concur in his favor. He still had the puppet tool in Obito. Goodness knows what would happen if Obito gave up on the plan. Worse: Madara did say the plan didn't go in order, but in the end his revival was made complete.

He knew someone would need his power. And guess what: he was right.

Both. He and Hashirama have both shown extensive knowledge of jutsu that were completely obscure to pretty much everyone else. Madara even understood things such as the intent of Gaara throwing sand into him being to slow him down.

But I wouldn't deem Madara a smart person in the sense of practicality.
His entire plan ultimately revolved around hoping an unstable teenager wouldn't have a change of heart or a new goal. Only in fiction could Madara find such conveniently simple characters.

So without a doubt Madara is smart, and with his 80+ years there's no questioning his experience aka prep time will come in along with his intellect.

He had 20 years of prep.

Just remember too that clans with high level Yin energy have a lot of mental energy which stimulates their brains, and considering the fact that Uchiha's special chakra comes from the brain would imply that their special chakra from their brain is what gives them abnormally high intellect.
