Eh Light was obviously better. Light manipulated more than one person is order to achieve his goal which is something L did but still lost. People keep mentioning superpowers but really, the death note by nature had many constraints and rules, it wouldn't Instantly make someone OP. Light was able to calculate and predicate many people's actions in the far future, and he was completely accurate. L was never able to predicate anything significantly impactful like that. L had the entire world plus multiple secret organizations, yet he still lost. And again, even at the very end light mainly lost due someone else's mistake which ironically the same person you people call an "ally", if mikame had followed Light's plan word to word, Light would have not lost. If we were to give death note to another equally smart person such as light or L, they would have still lost because using the death note required a huge amount of conviction and mental power which is only few had. It was honestly a close call until light made his plan of losing his memory and it worked successfully, he even knew the very spot in which he would touch the note and regain his memory, Who the **** does that? People say L blindly, thinking that having the death note is what made light what he was, in fact it was they very opposite, Light is what made the death note Awesome and that is implied by ryuuk at multiple occasions. Again, neither near nor mello were close to light in terms of intelligence that can simply be seen when even the arrogant little baby near had said that it was team work of himself, mello and of course L. L used many dirty actions when he got desperate, it reached the point where he scared the crap out of two teens just for being suspected, and had even thrown light in the jail again with no proof. It got so dirty to the point he lied about light being his only friend, mind you the author had stated that was a lie that's purpose was to just pursue light admit being kira smh . Even ryuuk knew that Light was different than other humans even L, they were not the same, Light had already abandoned the world and the people that lived in it in order to be a god, and so he succeed until he depended on more people, especially idiots like mikame.
