Also the manga and the anime have a VERY different portrayal of the ending. In both Kira ends up dead but the presentation of it is so key and so strikingly different. In the anime, Mikami slits his arm and causes a divertion, Light takes this opportunity and staggers to the door. Somehow he manages to escape the taskforce and Near says to let him go, and that he 'won't get far'. Light on his final stretch is shown in a more positive light and dies peacefully on a staircase as you see the remainder of the innocent well-intended kid Yagami once was as L watches him die and Misa is presumed to commit suicide. It's a sad ending of course, but is it the ending Light deserved?

In the original manga though, Kira's death is much less majestic. There is absolutely no sympathy for the absolute monster Light had become. If you haven't read the manga's ending I SERIOUSLY recommend reading it right now. Light instead in this version never escapes the warehouse and dies a true villain's death.

In my personal opinion, Light is a character deserving of the latter manga ending. Not because I dislike him or am an L supporter but it's the most striking and conclusive for the character.

Don't get me wrong, I love Death Note and Light is a f*cking fantastic character but the moment Kira killed Naomi and enjoyed killing her he became the villain. 'Gods' don't enjoy to kill. Light lost sight of his goal and became a deluded monster with the same mentality and pure obsession as the people who killed at the beginning. The anime ending is such bullsh*t for me. Light Yagami's tragic but amazing story NEEDS to end with him crawling across the floor screaming for help and then dying on the floor. There should be no redemption for somebody who became so corrupted in their own god delusions. It was a much better ending IMO.

I like both endings. The anime ending was okay to me. Light started good, but became corrupted. He realized that when he was dying. He died at the middle of the staircase, because a DN-holder won't go to heaven or hell. It was a symbolic ending.

Agreed. The symbolism was very lovely but the gospel angel music was a little too overbearing for me. It's like it's meant to scream to the viewer that Kira actually is dying a heroes death when really the whole point of Death Note is that the 'Justice' theme is entirely debatable. The best thing with Death Note was that you got to decide who you morally thought the protagonist and the antagonists were.

That's why i'm slightly more hedging the manga ending. That last panel is SO important.

The fact that there are real, innocent people in their masses still praising Kira even after his demise struck me as an odd unrelated ending at first. But then I realised, that girl at the end in the hood....is meant to symbolise us. We got to decide who our hero was and the manga left it on that final note to show that the viewers who followed Kira are just as right as the L/Taskforce/NearMello crowd. At the end of the day it's down to us and this conflict will never be resolved.

I agree with you that the manga ending was better suited for Light. The anime one seems kind of unrealistic how NOBODY stops him from running away (even before Near tells them not to pursue him). Even Near telling them not to catch him seems a bit strange. Back on topic, the manga ending showed us that Kira is just any other criminal and it was (as far as Death Note goes) very realistic; like with terrorists in the real world, he wasn't given a super hero's death and I liked that. It also shows us that he goes kinda crazy when he screams for all the different people for help even if they can't, they're not there or they're dead.

It's only the VERY ending and it's only big symbolically. They're both good endings and result the same way in the end

I don't know how Light begging for his life was the right move in the manga ending , that was horrible done IMO & the anime ending was just meh , Light became obsess Yes , but still he got defeated by plot , & he should have won .

I'll go with anime. My reason is the same as SanjiNL's. Kira started out with the right intentions, despite being an extremist, but ended up corrupted. He realizes that. It's not heroic. Being half dead and dragging yourself half a mile across town with blood dripping down. Nothing heroic about it at all.

Defeated by plot...? The plots the only thing that leads you to believe it should have won. You can't really argue with it yknow?

And he doesn't really beg for his life, he just demands that everybody he twisted help him except none of them are there because he got them all killed because he saw them as dispensable.

I think i like the anime ending better. It made me feel sorry for Light. The manga ending was just a way for Obata to say "f*ck you light you MONSTAH". Light's goal was good. His methods were evil. I'd call him a villain though. He was killing innocent people that opposed him.

But the point of the manga ending is that all of those innocent people who he gave gruesome and pathetic deaths to...

And then finally he got his own pathetic death. I find it sad that Ukita, Soichiro Yagami, Mello and L all got such pathetic deaths and at the end of it in the anime he doesn't get as much of one.

The reason why Kira is a villain for me is because he had a god delusion, if he didn't have such an ego and delusions of grandeur then he would've been smart and never had made his presence known. He could've spaced out his killings slightly more and killed them with more than just heart attacks to make it seem like they died of natural causes but instead the police force only noticed because Light used a trademark that basically said to the police force 'come and get me' and so Kira actively brought in police who would try and kill him and thus he had to kill.

He was corrupt from the start you fcking idiot. The moment someone crosses that line between moderate and extremist that's when they become evil. If he had good intentions he would never have used the Death Note in the first place and, by way of pacifying your retarded ass even if he used it once he would have immediately stopped, gotten rid of the damn thing and went about his life. From the beginning Light was corrupt because he felt that: 1) he could decide who had the right to live or die 2) he set himself above his fellow man 3) he had a god complex. All of these things were elements of his personality long before he got the Death Note so no jackass he didn't have the right intentions. FCK your parents were brother and sister weren't they.
