He summoned a real crow, and allowed naruto to see it in his genjutsu.

It's paradoxical: it could not have been Genjutsu, for did Kabuto did not seal off his eyes?

Conversely, I would assert it was Genjutsu, because Itachi's Mangekyō was centralized during the technique's execution; but this contradicts the previous premise.

In sum, I'm simply unsure; it was likely Ninjutsu, I suppose.

It is a crow clone. They are just there to help him cast genjutsu.

Itachi uses a Crow summon, they are real crows..

however :hint: his crow summon uses powers according to Itachi just like Katsuyu dos according to Tsunade.

like Gamabunta transformed into ''Kurama'' because he allowed Naruto to use Transformation jutus on him..

so the Crows can be used with Itachi's chakra for Genjutsu, Ninjutsu, shadow clone or whatever :itachi:

He uses the clone as a Shadow Clone and Substitution jutsu because it requires less chakra.
