I doubt he could release edo tensei without seals and neither could hashirama. It was just that they could resist control and not fight for their masters. It's not like they could fight oro/kabuto back. Otherwise edo tensei would have a risk of backfiring. Oro/kabuto could still put them to sleep i reckon. But since madara knew the seals, he could undo it while resisting and fight back.

Sure he knows the seals which allow him to break it but he cannot preform those seals unless kabuto allows him to or gives him full control over his own body.
The only reason he did it in cannon was because itachi broke kabuto's control over all his edo by forcing him to do the seals that undo the jutsu.

Madara's abilities are far above anyone's off course he'd be strong enough to resist the control but control here means bodily restraint. Not willpower restraint that requires seals. Even then I'm sure Madara wouldn't be easily controlled.
