well stopping madara does not mean that he is stronger than madara.and he used the word 'can'.at that time madara was fighting 5 kage and if hashirama (suppose) joins to stop madara from killing them there is a possibility but there is no proof that madara reffered to his edo form.

Yeah I think he meant his edo state, and it would be reasonable to say at this point that Madara would be right. I mean, both Madara and Hashirama grew up in a chaotic world where getting stronger was required in order to make a name for yourself or to even live. Well he says Hashirama was the only one who could ever defeat him. Then says "too bad he isnt here", then goes on to talk about how the damaged the battlefield will be if Hashirama was there. He's quite obviously talking about his edo state. If he was talking about his old state, he would said something like "only Hashirama could ever stop me, but even he cant help you now" or "am stronger than him now".
