Garp tried his best protecting Ace.
He hide Ace in one of the weakest sea in OPverse so that Roger's enemy don't kill him.
He wanted Ace n Luffy to join Marines so that world sees them differently.
He even let Luffy hit him when he reached platform.
The only reason he let Dadan hit him bcus after Ace's death he was heartbroken.
