Was anybody else frustrated by Kishimoto's inconsistency with Kakashi?

I made a post similar to this in a VS section thread.

Here's how Kakashi was portrayed within the text of the manga. In order words, this is what Kishimoto had to say about him:

- A prodigious talent very rarely seen throughout history. Graduated the academy at the age of 5, promoted to genin at 6, to chunin at 8 or 9, and to jōnin at 13 years old. Joined the ANBU black ops around that time and became a captain later on.
- The son of Konoha's White Fang, whose skills and fame overshadowed that of the Sannin.
- Created Chidori and mastered the raiton by the time he became a jōnin, which was @ 13 years of age.
- Noted to be a genius and worthy of the Hokage title by Jiraiya and Tsunade, two of the legendary Sannin who are both kage level shinobi themselves
- Gained respect and recognition from the likes of Minato and Itachi, both prodigous talents and kage level shinobi
- Garnered fame as the "Copy Ninja" and "Kakashi of the Sharingan"; noted to have copied over 1,000 techniques

However, up until the War Arc, we never really received what we all expected from Kakashi. Despite the tremendous amount of hype he received, he always seemed to be overshadowed by other characters throughout Part 2. The guy was supposed to be the strongest jōnin in Konoha, one that could pose a valid threat through sheer skill alone to nearly any shinobi regardless of who they were. Even throughout the War Arc, Kishimoto really dissapointed me with the constant spamming of Kamui. There I was thinking that Kakashi could finally prove his worth and status through the use of new abilities like other cool/versatile raiton/doton/suiton techniqes, more genjutsu feats, more speed feats, and more variety to his already impressive arsenal. In the end, all that was shown was one boring, overused, and overwanked technique that Kakashi himself wouldn't even use on another shinobi.

Not to mention that Kishi had the likes of Kakuzu (who I think Kakashi should beat under regular circumstances) pressure and overwhelm him, making the readers question his portrayal. It also didn't help that he had Guy showcase the 6th Gate (and later the 7th Gate), which was above any feat Kakashi showed at the time, considering the duo are supposed to be on par with each other.

Mind you, I still think Kakashi is a pretty strong character as he is now. However, being Minato's diciple, he wasn't able to come close to matching and surpassing him. He wasn't able to prove to every reader why he should be among the very best (other than the stupid Kamui/DMS büllshït that didn't make any sense). To be honest with you, I think Kishimoto really floundered and shit the bed with such a vital character. He's done this with other characters as well, but I'd argue Kakashi is one of the top 5 most important characters in Naruto, which makes it even worse.

Part 1 was all about hype. The only ones who really lived up to it were Madara, Hashirama, and Itachi.

Like I said plenty of times kishi created the war arc to show the power of the otstsuki and their reincarnations over anyone else.

Like kakashi, minato was disgraced so he won't over shadow his son and sasuke. Kishi wanted the narusasu combination to dominate the manga.

He killed itachi off for the same reason

well kakashi's class of ninja weren't that impressive besides guy and that's proabably why he was considered a genius. Don't get me wrong he's strong and smart and everything but being around weaker people makes you look better.

Kakashi was never meant to be someone insanely strong. It was obvious since the prologue that he was talented at best, but never in the top tiers.

Does Kakashi have any good speed feats? because that's honestly the only thign that can save his character at this point in terms of power.

That scan doesn't prove what you've stated. If you're trying to say something about a potential matchup between Kakashi and Haku, Haku would get fodderized.

I'd argue that he was supposed to be a top tier shinobi, considering the hype that he received and what he achieved at a young age.

Kakashi is piccolo. He goes up against opponents first to give the readers a feel of how strong the opponent is. Then the a MC comes in and finishes said opponent off.

Kishi digresses, most of the hype you listed where someone else's achievements. Becoming ANBU isn't even a noteworthy feat. He himself admitted theirs children in the world stronger than him, even with the sharingan, he's not top teir.

Kakashi went down hill after Itachi hit him with Tsukiyomi. It wouldn't be until The War arc that Kakashi would win another fight.

The viz translation of the page is:

Minato: Kakashi's father is Sakumo, the genius ninja feared as The White Fang of Konoha. In his time, the "Three Great Shinobi" of Konoha legend paled beside him.

Growing up beside a man like that...it's hardly a surprise that Kakashi's standards for others are unnaturally high.

Obito: The White Fang...come to think of it, I'm sure I've heard of him. He's some hero who saved the village, and died in the line of duty. Funny, I've never heard Kakashi say a word about him.

Minato: He was a great man revered by everyone...including, of course, Kakashi. That is, until the incident...

Obito: ...Incident?

Kakashi did pose a threat; even Nagato conceeded that his being alone would interfere with the Tsuki no Me and he was right.

- Gave a Rinnegan user a difficult time with skill and tactics despite being economical with chakra.
- Inhibited the Tsuki no Me at different points both directly and indirectly.
- Went toe to toe with multiple Edo Jins in their V2 states, taking their tails.
- Devised the strategy that would signal Kaguya's defeat.

We got to see how much of a threat Kakashi is when he got DMS; his crazy good battle skills being augmented by a great deal of raw power; enough to curb Kaguya's "Bijuu Mode" and blitz her with Raikiri.

He did pose a threat, b/c of his high intelligence and the fact that he had some intel on Pain's abilities. Kakashi is a hard opponent to defeat if he has intel. I would argue that he would have killed Tendō and Gakidō if Chōji and Chōza hadn't shown up at such an inoportune time.
