Gaara sand wasn't effected because they used there ability in complete sync similar to

for the natural elemental advantage. After that's done Kisame absorbs Samehada to nullify Gaara sand crushing techs which means he could absorb chakra control over the sand on touch via His body being fused with Samehada. Then

ends Gaara. Also GSB absorbs chakra and the more chakra it absorbs it gets stronger and more lethal.
