Positive Effects of Video Games
•When your child plays video games, it gives his brain a real workout. In many video games, the skills required to win involve abstract and high level thinking. These skills are not even taught at school. Some of the mental skills enhanced by video games include:

o Following instructions
o Problem solving and logic - When kids play games such as The Incredible Machine, Angry Birds or Cut The Rope, they train their brain to come up with creative ways to solve puzzles and other problems in short bursts
o Hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skills. In shooting games, the character may be running and shooting at the same time. This requires the real-world player to keep track of the position of the character, where he/she is heading, their speed, where the gun is aiming, if the gunfire is hitting the enemy, and so on. All these factors need to be taken into account, and then the player must then coordinate the brain's interpretation and reaction with the movement in their hands and fingertips. This process requires a great deal of eye-hand coordination and visual-spatial ability to be successful. Research also suggests that people can learn iconic, spatial, and visual attention skills from video games. There have been even studies with adults showing that experience with video games is related to better surgical skills. Also, a reason given by experts as to why fighter pilots of today are more skillful is that this generation’s pilots are being weaned on video games.
o Planning, resource management and logistics. The player learns to manage resources that are limited, and decide the best use of resources, the same way as in real life. This skill is honed in strategy games such as SimCity, Age of Empires, and Railroad Tycoon. Notably, The American Planning Association, the trade association of urban planners and Maxis, the game creator, have claimed that SimCity has inspired a lot of its players to take a career in urban planning and architecture.
o Multitasking, simultaneous tracking of many shifting variables and managing multiple objectives. In strategy games, for instance, while developing a city, an unexpected surprise like an enemy might emerge. This forces the player to be flexible and quickly change tactics.
o Quick thinking, making fast analysis and decisions. Sometimes the player does this almost every second of the game giving the brain a real workout. According to researchers at the University of Rochester, led by Daphne Bavelier, a cognitive scientist, games simulating stressful events such as those found in battle or action games could be a training tool for real-world situations. The study suggests that playing action video games primes the brain to make quick decisions. Video games can be used to train soldiers and surgeons, according to the study.

Copy and paste is your friend.

Video games are a source of relaxation and arousal.

Poping heads off with a shot gun counts.

i think it all depends. my son plays video games and he's 2. being smart enough, i only allow him to play hardcore educational games, which he enjoys alot because he likes to learn. it's the way his brain works and thats how i plan on keeping it. his cousin, who happens to be a couple months older, is a different case. he likes gta and cod and games like thta, he like violence and guns etc. the funny thing about it is he is lacking in areas he that are essential to this period of his life. he doesn't know his colors and although he can count numbers ( 1-10) he can't tell you what they stand for or how much they are. he just knows them by name. his type of brain is an active one. he can play basketball better than some adults, but can't spell his name. my sone on the other hand, is slightly on the softer side. he is more geared towards taking things apart and how to put them back together. he's a thinker. he see's things once and knows how to do them.
as far as gaming in general. i don't blame games, the companies that create them, or the people who sell them. i personally feel like anyone can be givin any game and play it, and come away perfectly fine. the key here is understanding why the game is the way it is. there is no emphasis on these things. cod has a storyline that is very vague, and commercials and trailers tell you nothing of it, they only show you explosions and weapons. games like gta don't really have storylines. sandbox games liek that are pretty much free form. they should express that you can do whatever you want how you want, but also weigh heavily on the fact that it is just a game. they could even throw in elements to let you know that its just a game. i might have rambled on..i apologies. i have so much more to say...lol

video games are neutral.
They have their share of positives and negatives.

They are NOT responsible for the mass shootings in any way.

Way back in the day, kids would actually shoot each other with bb guns and stuff, yet there was no violent shootings.

So with this i have shown, that both guns and video games, have almost nothing to do with violence, hence makeing them neutral

(srry for getting a bit off topic)

I learned more about my major from video games and the internet than I have 3 years of schooling.

I have also played GTA since I was 10 and I have yet to jack a non-virtual car or go on a shooting rampage.

Violent Video Games May Increase Aggression in Some but Not Others, Says New Research

"Violent video games are like peanut butter," said Ferguson. "They are harmless for the vast majority of kids but are harmful to a small minority with pre-existing personality or mental health problems."

Another study showed that videogames only affect less than 5% of children. The other 95% are unaffected or helped. It is pretty much like guns.
