we know that there is a devils fruit book which has info on all the fruits. blackbeard has seen this book and sanji has read it aswell. sanji saw the book as a kid before separating from his vinsmokes. with knowledge of vinsmokes being assassins, i deduce that all the vinsmokes have read and throughly studied the devil fruit book as well.*
the key here is how long the book has been around. i believe the book was around 52 year ago back when brook was a rumbar pirate. we know brooks crew was attacked and slaughtered by another pirate crew who used poisoned weapons. assassins/vinsmokes would probably use poisen weapons to ensure the death of a target.*the main question that arises from this now is, "why would the Vinsmokes target brook 52 years ago??". ill tell ya why

*its been speculated that the the vinsmokes helped overthrow the ancient kingdom during the void century. now since that time 900 years ago, the gorosei have remained the face of the government while germa 66 lead by the vinsmokes have been in the shadows. we know germa 66 is planning on trying to overthrow the government atm by aligning with yonko bigmam but lets look at the very enemy they're trying to overthrow.
the gorosei have been alive for 900+ years. some say their power is due to the life tree. well, assuming it is, if your a vinsmoke and want to overthrow a enemy whos essentially immortal, trying to obtain immortality yourself is a good course of action. now outside of the life tree the gorosei owns, there's been 3 fruits shown that support immortality in op. 1st fruit is jewelry bonneys and the fact that akainu went out of his way to capture her shows her importance. 2nd is getting a ope ope user to perform a immortality surgery. Doflamingo wanted law to performe that surgery for him.
3rd and most important fruit is brooks devil fruit.*the very fact that brook is still alive shows his fruit is on a similar tier to the life tree the gorosei uses. the vinsmokes who were living 52 years ago were aware of brooks df because they read about it in the same df book that sanji and bb saw and set off to kill brook in order to obtain the fruit. this is why they came and slaughtered brooks whole crew.
besides knowing the specific df, the vinsmokes also conviently caught wind of the bounty that brook earned during those times(same bounty he bragged about earning to luffy about in thriller bark) and it was how they tracked brook in the Florian triangle all the way from north blue.*
this was 1 of the Vinsmokes failed assassinations though because they were probably relying on brook dying and the df respawning somewhere else but they underestimated the ability of brooks df, which has him still alive 52 yrs later after the fact.*
