this is the buu saga. vegeta allowed babidi to take control of his mind, giving him the power boost needed to turn into super saiyan 2. however, he was able to overcome the mind control due to sheer pride. after a fight with goku, he admitted he had gone "soft", growing fond of his life on earth and his family and that deep down, he wanted to be the ruthless killer he was before. after realizing he had given babidi the energy needed to conjure majin buu, vegeta knocked goku out and went on the fight him alone. after realizing that buu was practically immortal, he decided to suicide blast him, but before, he embraced his son and hugged him before knocking him out and giving him to piccolo. he then channel his energy in the form of a scream that unleashed an explosion that burned out his life energy, turning him into stone and scattering him into the wind in the form of ashes.
