Uzimaki DNA required for Rinnegan not Senju?

Did Madara manage to awake the Rinnegan himself, or was it from giving his EMS to Nagato?

Senju+Uchiha=Rikudou.

madara unlocked it himself but as long as your sage of six path related you should be able to handle it since sage's relative's are known to have abnormal abilities.

I just find it odd that out of everyone it was Nagato who got his eyes from Madara
and by what Tobi says here about Naruto being a pawn.
