User Submitted News
What I'm suggesting is allowing users to write their own news articles to be submitted on NB, whether it be in a thread or through a submission process or whatnot. These articles will then gain the potential to be displayed on the front page. Obviously, before they can ever be displayed on the front page, they will require some form of peer review as well as staff review.
Gives people something to do, and perhaps draw in a larger crowd of writers, as well as contribute more original content to NB. If I'm correct, updating the news isn't that difficult either, and the articles can be linked to their respective thread where more activity can be generated. Perhaps drawing in new members who want to discuss the news as well.
Perhaps there can be a once weekly featured news article.
The hierarchy for submission to the front page would work something like this:
Users go about writing their own, original content, articles and making threads. Other users read these articles, and review them/give them ratings. A staff member will then proceed to review the highest rated for the week. Said staff member will then present them to an admin capable of editing the front page, and said admin will then proceed to post said articles in a relative news post. For the thumbnail I'd imagine the user's avatar could be used, presenting them with recognition for their hard work.

- Repetitive Submissions
