Alright let's see if I still got it

The towering gates of the ancient city loomed over the battlefield, their weathered stonework standing as a testament to an age defined by conquest and conflict. Beyond them lay the promise of civilization, but the open ground before the walls offered little more than hard-packed earth, scattered stones, and the occasional patch of stubborn vegetation. A dry wind swept across the plain, lifting fine dust from the ground and carrying it through the space between the two shinobi who had gathered for their exchange.
Retsu stood comfortably upon the uneven terrain, his dark attire shifting with the breeze as his gaze settled upon his opponent. There was something fitting about the setting, he thought. An expansive field, ancient walls, and two shinobi preparing to test their abilities. It was almost enough to make the occasion feel like a page torn from some old tale of warriors and their contests of skill.

A faint smile touched his features as he adjusted his stance, rolling his shoulders to loosen them before allowing his arms to rest at his sides. He had no intention of treating a spar as though the fate of a village depended upon its outcome. There was a difference between respecting an opponent and assuming they needed to be defeated at any cost, and Retsu had long since learned to appreciate that distinction.

"Interesting place for a friendly exchange," he remarked, briefly glancing toward the immense gates before returning his attention to the shinobi before him. "Let's try to leave the architecture intact, shall we?"

His tone carried a trace of amusement, though the relaxed expression did little to diminish the attentiveness behind his eyes.
Retsu shifted his right foot backward, settling into a balanced stance with his knees slightly bent. His hands rose before his torso, palms open and fingers relaxed, establishing a posture that allowed him to transition smoothly between movement and defense. There was no unnecessary tension in his shoulders, nor any exaggerated display intended to intimidate his opponent. He simply prepared himself for the exchange ahead.

Then, with a familiar gesture, he raised two fingers toward his temple and passively activates his Dojutsu.

"Byakugan."
(Dōjutsu: Byakugan) Eye Technique: The All Seeing White Eye
Type:
Supplementary
Rank: C
Range: Short-Long
Chakra: 15 (+5 per turn to keep active)
Damage: N/A
Description: The kekkei genkai intrinsic to both the Hyūga and Ōtsutsuki clans—descendants of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. Those who possess this dōjutsu have it manifested as eyes with featureless white irides and no visible pupils. And when activated, the pupils become more distinct and the veins near their temples bulge. To activate the dōjutsu, Hyuga but not Ōtsutsuki clan members are initially obliged to use a rather long and specific sequence of handseals: Horse → Tiger → Boar → Hare → Rat → Dog → Horse → Dog → Hare → Rat → Boar → Snake. But once activated, the dōjutsu user is endowed with a range of skills.

To start, an activated Byakugan gives the user a near 360º diameter field of vision bar one blind spot at the back of the neck, above the first thoracic vertebra. Its vision can penetrate through any solid objects or obstructions, and likewise remains unaffected by blinding interferences. But that being said, certain barriers and the like may distort its perception. In addition, it is able to follow high-speed movements, which enables those with this dōjutsu to analyze their foes' actions and better react to them. The Byakugan is also able to see chakra to a higher degree than the Sharingan and ergo, identify where a person's chakra signature originates from. Beyond that, it can discern certain types of clones from the real person. And its ability to see chakra is in fact so acute that those who possess this dōjutsu are even able to see the chakra pathway system and the 361 tenketsu that comprise it. The Hyūga clan has gone so far as to develop their unique Gentle Fist style in order to capitalize on this particular ability.

Note: Hyuga clan bios of at least Jonin rank become able to passively activate their dōjutsu upon two weeks having passed since Gentle Fist training concluded. Ōtsutsuki bios never need to expend a move in order to activate it.
Note: While traversing the NW, bios with activated Byakugan are able to see up to two 2 adjacent landmarks away while those of sage rank can see as far as three away, but this doesn't extend beyond an ocean landmark.

Retsu took a measured breath. His hands clapped together as chakra gathered within him, shifting into the fluid nature of Water Release. Beneath the surface of the earth, moisture began to accumulate through the technique's chakra driven formation, preparing to surge upward beneath the area occupied by his opponent.

“Water Style… Gushing Water Imprisonment.”
(Suiton: Funshutsu Mizu Kinko) - Water Release: Gushing Water Imprisonment
Type: Supplementary
Rank: B
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra: 20
Damage: N/A
Description: The user creates a flow of gushing water under the opponent which traps them in a sphere of water. The user can perform an attack while the opponent is trapped. This jutsu is similar to Water Prison Technique, though the user doesn't need to keep his arm in the sphere of water.

The ground beneath his opponent's position became the focal point of Retsu's technique. A sudden surge of water erupted upward from below, rushing toward the space occupied by the opposing shinobi. The forceful current expanded rapidly, its rising flow gathering into a rounded mass of water intended to envelop the target and form a spherical prison around their body. The water churned and folded in upon itself, its surface catching the light as it rose above the dusty battlefield.

Retsu remained at his original position, maintaining his balance while his Byakugan tracked the unfolding technique. Unlike a conventional Water Prison, this technique did not require him to maintain physical contact with the sphere or keep his arm submerged within it. That freedom allowed him to remain mobile and attentive to his surroundings rather than committing himself to holding the prison in place.

His objective was straightforward: test his opponent's reaction to an unexpected attack emerging from beneath their position.
He made no assumption that the technique would succeed merely because it had been initiated. His opponent might evade the rising water, interrupt its formation, or respond with a technique of their own. Any of those outcomes would provide Retsu with useful information about their instincts and capabilities.

The sphere continued to form, the rushing water momentarily obscuring portions of the battlefield as it rose. Retsu's pale eyes remained focused on the developing situation, following the visible movements of his opponent as best he could through the changing conditions.

He did not immediately launch a second attack. This was a spar, after all, and the purpose was to explore the exchange rather than overwhelm his partner before they had an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Instead, Retsu maintained his ready stance, his weight balanced and his hands free to respond.

A faint smile returned to his face.

"Let's see how you handle that."

The words were calm, almost conversational, contrasting with the sudden rush of water between the two shinobi. Behind them, the gates of Troy remained silent beneath the open sky, while the wind continued to sweep dust across the ancient plain.

With the Byakugan still active and his attention fixed upon the unfolding exchange, Retsu waited to see whether his opponent would escape the rising water or answer the technique with one of their own.

The first move had been made.

Now it was their turn.
