“The next attack will decide it.”

Itachi's ominous declaration vibrated the tense atmosphere and silence took its place. Yuki took a small step back as yet another bead of sweat sank to the ground from her pallid face. She looked delirious, confusion written all over her face showing itself through sunken wide eyes and a half opened mouth. She regained her composition and turned towards Itachi, the young genius who had completely defeated and subdued her moments ago with the power emanating from his crimson eyes which she was careful to avoid as she gazed at his person in complete awe.

“Hmmm...defeating everyone here in one move might be too much even for us, Itachi-taichou.” Cho stated plainly, eyes peeled on the opposing trio while wearing a small smile. “Hope you have a plan?”

“Have I ever led you guys wrong?” Itachi asked, beaming with a smile as he flexed his arm on his sword. “Follow my lead.” With that, the Uchiha seemingly disappeared into thin air, reappearing above Kiyosato before bringing down his blade on the traitor.

“He's fast!” Kiyosato thought as he parried the attack with a kunai and Itachi leaped away, suddenly vanishing from sight due to a thick fog which blanketed the battlefield. “Mist?” he asked, confused.

“They're trying to blind us.” Yuki commented in a calm voice as her eyes darted in every direction, desperately searching for any sign of an incoming attack while her grip on her sword tightened. “Keep your guard up Kiyosato, Shindo.”

The third member of the mysterious trio, who she referred to as Shindo, sighed, exasperated, seeming to have lost all interest in the battle as he rubbed his temples. “This is...” he was cut off back a sword slash from behind which he narrowly evaded without even turning around or losing his composure. He spun around to see his attacker and was disappointed when he observed that it was just one of the Kumo nin under Kaoru's control. “I was wondering why the attack was so slow and ineffective, its just a pawn. I see, the Yamanaka in control of this one must be a sensor so she can navigate even in this mist.” He observed with a small smile, gazing his opponent with an unimpressed look.

Yuki charged at the Kumo ninja, sword in hand at startling speed. She was surprised when her opponent immediately retreated into the thick cloud of mist and a flock of crows darted in her direction. “Itachi's crows!” she thought as the black colored birds encompassed her. Another Kumo nin emerged from the cloud of birds and attacked her. She quickly bifurcated him at the waist, separating his torso from his legs as he gasped his last breath. “If I'm not mistaken, the Yamanaka in control should be dead now that I've killed one of her pawns.” she mused as the shinobi, now a corpse, fell to the floor, blood easing out of his two halves forming a large pool of blood. She was surprised to hear a low pitch, sizzling sound. Turning to the corpse beside her, she observed in shock that his back was decorated with numerous explosive notes which were slowly being licked away by a tiny flame. “Damn it! She must have planned to dispel the Mind Transfer technique just before I slashed through that guy! Damn it, I...” her thoughts were interrupted by an ear piercing explosion as she along with the corpse went up in flames.

Kiyosato was shocked when Yuki along with the corpse of the Kumo ninja were obliterated before his eyes. The crows around her immediately flew towards Shindo allowing Kiyosato to now clearly see the charred corpse of his female comrade. “Yuki!” he called out just before he observed a human-sized tornado coming straight at him in the person of Cho, using the Inuzuka trademark technique. “Tch.” he hissed as he evaded the ANBU ninja but his troubles were not yet over as Cho immediately spun around to attack him again. Kiyosato immediately formed a number of hand seals before unleashing a torrent of flames from his lips at his attacker, forcing the Inuzuka to spin upwards to evade. Cho immediately resumed his attack on Kiyosato after dodging the fire technique.

Kiyosato evaded the Inuzuka once more but as Cho spiralled past his opponent, he abruptly stopped spinning and unleashed a number of weapons at the traitor shinobi. Kiyosato evaded them though a few managed to graze his clothing causing him to wince. He clapped his hands into a seal then inhaled deeply, ready to unleash hell in the form a Katon jutsu from his lips but suddenly froze when he felt the tight grasp of a person's hand around his neck. It was another one of the Kumo ninja under Kaoru's control. The Kumo ninja slumped and collapsed face first into the ground just as Kiyosato straightened himself.

“Nice job Kaoru.” Cho complimented with a warm smile as he placed one hand on his hip in a relaxed pose.

“Thanks.” Kiyosato responded beaming from ear to ear. His body and mind were now under Kaoru's control as she transferred her mental energy from the Kumo ninja to Kiyosato when she grabbed his neck. “Now that we have captured the traitor, all that remains is that one opponent.”

Shindo was encompassed by a flock of crows which acted to nullify his sight though, strangely, he couldn't look more indifferent. Not even bothering to stand straight, wearing the most apathetic facial expression with dimmed eyes and perfectly horizontal lips, he looked, quite frankly, bored. “Alright Itachi,” he began in a dull, dreary tone, “with my team defeated I guess I have no choice but to explain my top secret mission from Konoha.”

His words, though quite low in volume, seemed to resound in the ears of everyone present. Itachi suddenly appeared behind him and pressed his sword on the man's neck. “Explain.” Itachi commanded with a stoic expression as the flock of crows around both ninjas disappeared in a large puff of smoke. He was met with silence which caused him to increased the pressure on his sword. “Talk!” his voice more authoritative this time.

“Geez...” Shindo said, exasperated. He suddenly sank into a pool of water which shifted away from Itachi and then reformed into his person. “You're so serious.”

“So, you're an Houzuki.” Itachi observed, keeping his eyes on his opponent. “Konoha isn't in allegiance with Kiri so it's impossible for you to have a secret mission from Konoha.”

“I would like to give you the details Itachi, however...” he paused and stuck his tongue out. Itachi's eyes widened for a fleeting moment and then returned to normal when he saw the cursed seal engraved on the surface of his tongue. “So, you understand?” He asked, his tone lifeless.

“A member of Root.” Itachi stated flatly, though his eyes didn't relax, he still glared at Shindo as he would any enemy. “I have no soft spot for Danzo. My orders were to capture Kiyosato, if that interferes with Danzo's agenda then so be it.” He informed his opponent and pointed his blade at him.

“Here I though you understood the need to protect Konoha from the shadows.” he commented in a bland tone while giving Itachi a disappointed look. “You can have Kiyosato, I've already wiped his memories and Yuki is dead so there's no way to link either to Root. However, the kinjutsu he stole will remain with me.”

“There's us!” Katsura thundered. “We will give our full report to the Hokage. This will be the end of Danzo.” He further stated in a much lower pitch and a slight grin.

Shindo turned to him, giving him a look of severe disdain. “You're the one who created the mist...you're quite skilled. However, I'd shut up if I were you.” He warned then turned his attention back to Itachi with a smile. “If you were to accuse Danzo of treachery with no proof then it'd be a waste of time. Even if the Hokage were to act on your words, Root will fight against Konoha leading to a civil war that could mean the end of the village. I'm sure you understand this, Itachi?”

Itachi remained silent, gazing at his opponent coldly. “You are correct. However, we simply need to kill you and retrieve the scroll in order to complete our mission. This new information changes nothing.” The Uchiha narrowed his eyes and clutched his blade even tighter.

“The scroll is not here. It's hidden somewhere it can't be found.” Shindo stated flatly and casually placed one hand on his waist. “Even if you were to capture me, the Cursed Seal on my tongue will prevent me from divulging its location so it's a pointless waste of time. If you were to bring me back to Konoha, Danzo will simply kill me to make sure I don't tell you anything.” He turned his back on Itachi and began to walk away. “I'll tell you this. Root has no intention to let Konoha's enemies get their hands on the kinjutsu but if you don't let me go now, that's exactly what will happen.”

“You don't really think that we'll actually...”

“Stop it, Cho.” Itachi ordered. “He's right. We don't have enough understanding of the situation to know if completing our mission will be in Konoha's best interest. Protecting Konoha has to take priority.”

“But, our mission...”

“We have Kiyosato.” Itachi cut him off yet again. “And Kumo isn't going to get the scroll since, like he said, it's not here.”

“But he could be lying.” Cho protested once more, fuming with anger that his Captain was actually considering letting their enemy go and surprised that his teammates remained silent. “We can't just disobey Hokage-sama!”

“If he were lying, Koaru would have sensed changes in his chakra. She hasn't alerted me of anything so he must be telling the truth. Besides, Kumo's forces will be here soon, we can't keep fighting for long. Let's go, I'll deal with the Hokage.” Itachi turned his attention back to Shindo. “I'm afraid I have no choice but to trust you.” He spoke reluctantly.

“I'll protect Konoha, don't worry.” He tried to assure Itachi. The Uchiha gave no response and quickly vanished into thin air, Katsura shot Shindo a piercing glare then disappeared as well, Cho slung Kaoru's unconscious body over his shoulder and left and Kiyosato, who was now possessed by Koaru, also followed the team of ANBU leaving Shindo alone.

The mysterious ninja turned to his left where he saw Yuki's charred corpse and smiled, not even bothering to see if she might have survived. Right next to her was the corpse of one of the Kumo ninjas who was under Koaru's control and was now burnt to a crisp. The stench of both burnt corpses filled the air and he winced. Looking to his right, he observed the other two Kumo ninjas who were under Kaoru's control. “She must have released her hold on them before leaving.” he thought as he dragged his feet towards them. “It possible that they saw the faces of Itachi's team so it's best if I kill them.” he mused as a kunai dropped from inside his sleeve. The weapon gleaned in the moonlight pouring through an open window before he fired it into the head of the first one who gave a sharp grunt before going silent then did the same to the second.

At that moment, a batallion of Kumo ninja arrived on the scene. They observed the corpses of their Kumo comrades with disgust as Yuki's with mild curiousity but there was no one else present as Shindo had already vanished. “Who...who could have done this?!” one asked, seething with rage.
