Silence echoed through the mist broken in lulls by splashing of water as more and more of Tobirama water clones met their doom at the hand of Uchiha Shinji. The clones attempted a number of techniques to destroy the barrier that completely protected their attacker but all to no avail as the defence suffered only little damage. The Houzuki clan descendant who Tobirama revived had also done all he could but was met with the same results. It was clear that the Uchiha had the advantage in the battle.
“Shinji-san's seems to be taking care of everything.” an armored Uchiha who looked as young as Miroku observed as another clone was teleported via black colored portal and eliminated.
“Next!” Shinji ordered, turning to Miroku. Shinji face took on a serious expression which he was using to try to mask his fatigue from using his Mangekyo Sharingan extensively, especially considering his age, though this was unsuccessful as the strain on him made itself known by the droplets of sweat that trickled down his slightly wrinkled face.
Their plan was perfect; sheild Tobirama's attacks with a barrier and take out his clones one by one. With the clones gone, they would be able to find the Senju and make him release Edo Tensei which would get rid of the revived Houzuki and the other two Tobirama had not used so far. However, Shinji was beginning to wonder if he could remain standing long enough to actually implement every stage of it as yet another drop of sweat escaped downward from his chin.
“There are only two Tobiramas left; one is attacking at 5 o'clock about 10 metres away.” Miroku replied, he was now calm and it showed in his voice. The young Uchiha's fears had faded away as evidenced by his relaxed tone. He wasn't as frantic as he was when the legendary Senju completely disappeared before their eyes and could not be tracked by any means as he slaughtered every one of them, one by one. While he was less scared of their opponent, he had perceived another reason to worry: he could sense Shinji's chakra and so knew the elder was weakening as his chakra had been reduced to less than half of its full quantity.
Shinji dispatched the last clone as he had done to the others. As the last drops of Tobirama's smokescreen of clones fell to the ground from the tip of Shinji's sword, the elder found his ageing lips twisting into a grin. “So, where's the real Tobirama?”
“He's at...”
“Two o'clock, 20 metres away.” Tobirama's voice cut Miroku off. He spoke with a relaxed and bored tone, with fear completely absent. “Come on.”
Shinji was taken back by this. He turned to Miroku who's silence combined with the flabbergasted look on his face told him that Tobirama did not lie; the Senju just gave his exact location. Had Tobirama figured out some sort of weakness to his dojutsu? Or perhaps he was just being cocky?
The only way to find out was to attack. Tobirama could not see him, this much he knew. This meant that the white haired Senju would not know when he attacks. Also, his portals will allow him instantly deliver an attack to Tobirama before the Senju would be able to react. These two factors were what allowed him to slaughter dozens of Tobirama's clones moments ago. He should be able to do the same with the real one. He formed the tiger seal and invoked a portal in front of himself. “Katon:” He spewed a massive amount of fire into the portal which disappeared and instantly reappeared from a black portal behind Tobirama, only moments away from reducing him to ash, the Senju's hands had already formed a hand seal.
“Suiton: Suijinheki!” Tobirama then spewed a massive amount of water on the ground which then rose into a circular wall of water around him, stopping the fire technique.
“Well, Miroku?” Shinji asked to confirm his opponent's fate from the chakra sensor.
“Tobirama....Tobirama is still standing. Your technique didn't connect, Shinji-san.” Miroku replied, the fear in his voice was unmistakable; Now he had two reasons to worry. Shinji was weakened and the elder's Mangekyo had been countered.
Shinji staggered and held himself from falling with one of his swords. “Kikyo,” he said, referring to the female who erected the barrier, “transfer some of yours and Miroku's chakra into me and keep that barrier up.”
“Yes sir.” she responded then proceeded to form a number of seals which invoked individual circles around Miroku, Shinji and herself. Two lines appeared; one which connected her circle to Shinji's and the other connected Miroku's to the elder's as well.
“Seems I was right.” Tobirama's voice was heard clearly through the mist. “Your Mangekyo Sharingan technique has a counter.”
“What,” started Shinji, “what do you mean?” the Uchiha asked with genuine curiosity. His voice was strained from fatigue.
“Well, before a portal appears there is a kind of signal; A cry, like that of a hawk or some other bird. Its volume is very low though, which is why nobody would have noticed it until now, probably not even you. My ears, trained to locate my enemies through sound while using the Hidden Mist technique, have no trouble hearing and instantly reacting to it.” Tobirama replied coolly as the mist began to fade.
“The mist...is fading.” Miroku observed. He scanned the battlefield which is littered with his fallen comrades who lay dead still in pools of their own blood, their bodies riddled with kunai. Some of them were alive though on the brink of death as he could sense.
The revived Houzuki seemed to be far off, standing in front of a large clam a great distance away, Miroku knew both were products of genjutsu. He also saw Tobirama, the Senju who was the direct cause of all the death. A scowl appeared on Miroku's face.
“The only reason I kept the mist was to hide my clones and force you to use your Mangekyo Sharingan in order to discover its weakness. Now that I've countered it, the mist has no purpose.” Tobirama said, his confidence clearly exposed by his tone.
“You bastard.” Shinji cursed.
“I could have shattered your barrier with ease, if I had used my other tools but they, unlike the Houzuki and myself, aren't adept at fighting under mist conditions. So I kept them away.” Tobirama gestured to his right, turning the everyone's attention to the other two unopened coffins. They looked exactly like the Houzuki's coffin, except that they each had a piece of paper on their closed lids which had sealing formulas on it.
“I see,” Miroku started, “you sealed the coffins to protect them as well as to prevent any sensors from locating them in the mist.”
“They are my strongest weapons after all.” Tobirama explained as the sealing tags crumbled and fell to the ground, the coffins lids followed suit.
“That...that's...”
