Upon a quick skim of the rules yielded no answer for me so i'll go here:

Are their rules about people using the same avatar? there seems to be this "ownership" mentality on all of these "avatar" threads

I see people posting a slew of avatars and people like call dibs on them and make them theirs.

I never thought avatars were like a commodity.

Even if theres no rule about it... is there some sort of unspoken guideline to using peoples avatars? Like if they're custom or something.

Whats stopping me from juts completely copying an admins custom avatar or something.

Never thought avatars were such a big deal

It's sort of an unspoken rule. I don't think you can get in trouble for that.
But what though? Can it be the same "thing" in the image (i.e, the same pose of naruto or something) just not the same exact image?

Or does it only apply to modified images to which someone has taken ownership?

if thats the case, a long ass time ago my buddy made an image of the gedou statue with gold teeth and a snap back, then some new member copied it and made it their avatar

You can report them for that.
I used to go through the same bullshit when I showed people my Avatars.

People always used to go behind my back and steal my avatars even though the first thing I told them was that they couldn't use my Avatars in all my Avatar Threads.[SUB]
You must be registered for see images

If a member sees a certain amount of similarity (depends on the member) he might get offended, point it out, or just might contact the mods. If that user edited the image himself then he will probably ask you to remove it or tell the mods. If you just found it on Google or something I doubt that other member would care. It all depends on who it is.

So just using the same image from something is fine, just not a custom image, but if its not in the rules the mods are powerless correct?

Even if it's not explicitly stated in the Global Rules, common courtesy indicates what should be the obvious. Any work, by a NB member on the site, may not be ripped. Permission to use someone's work is always required unless the creator states otherwise. In any case, prohibition of stealing members' work is at least expressed in the Design Hall Rules (GFX section).
