He died because he wanted to die. Sasuke didn't technically kill Itachi or defeat him in battle. Sasuke was helpless at the end of that battle and Itachi (might've) died from an unknown disease. Itachi battled Sasuke & Orochimaru so which of them killed him?
Itachi died a planned death in a battle involving Sasuke & Orochimaru in which neither of them dealt a death blow to him. Neither defeated Itachi , that battle's outcome was dictated on Itachi's terms before it even took place. He beat himself or whoever created the disease he died from. He didn't beat himself actually he gave up living. Factors outside of that fight shelved Itachi.

Its like fighting a 1 on 1 fistfight , then a sniper shoots 1 guy in the head and kills him.

What he wanted to do or aimed to do is pointless, him and Sasuke had a duel, Sasuke was the last man standing. He is the winner. Simple rules of a fight.

To all those who say Itachi is undefeated..... This is by your perspective

1) Nagato never lost to anyone... You cant count the battle with him and Itachi because Nagato wasn't in control it was kabuto. (if you can say Itachi didnt lose against sasuke because of a reason like "sickness" I believe kabuto taking over Nagato's body is more entitled to say)

2) Minato hasn't lost to anyone..... If you remember correctly Minato sacrificed "Sacrificed" himself to input nine tailed into Naruto. Seriously if you can say Itachi didn't lose to sasuke because of sickness and Jman because he retreated, then I can 110% say that Minato never lost... Even in his edo state Minho hasnt lost yet

3) Sasori never lost againSt anyone we know except Sakura and chyio, however Sasori saw the trap and went ahead and attacked (Manga fact, chiyo herself said that he saw the trap). So in reality he sacrificed himself just like "Itachi" did with sasuke in the same perspective.

4) Sakura never lost anyone I believe :/

5) shino never lost to anyone I believe :/

6) Naruto's Mother never lost... I mean she gave birth and had the 9 tailed extracted (you really can't count that as a lose, especially if you are saying Itachi lost to a "sickness""

7) Killerbee never lost to anyone, there were a few close calls however never really lost to anyone!! He beat the shit out of sasuke and Co then ran away to go "See the world". He never lost against Kisame because he was still fighting when his brother Ay showed up.

There is a few more for the list however I think you get the picture now... Just like the ones mentioned on top they died By Planning and sacrificing there Life which is the same perspective as (Itachi didn't lose because "sickness")

Itachi vs Sasuke was like training in Itachi's mind and a death match in Sasuke's mind. Sasuke didn't defeat Itachi... Itachi just died at the time he was going to die whether he fought Sasuke or not.. if he sat in that chair all day without taking more medicine.
example: Kimimaro vs Gaara ended without a victor sort of..
Kimimaro died because of a disease , but it happened during the Gaara/Lee fight. Kimimaro died from a disease he was naturally going to die from at that time(being off medication)it just so happens to be while he was in a fight, but Gaara didn't defeat him.

Edo Nagato was a summon by Kabuto and Kabuto's Edo Summon was defeated by Edo Itachi. An Edo Summon was defeated. It was called Edo Nagato.

I can't really grasp what you are trying to say... Are you agreeing with me that Nagato is undefeated or are you trying to explain and say that Itachi defeated him on that?
