Ok. So the top defenses in Naruto are...

1. Madara's Susanoo

2. Itachi's Susanoo

3. Gaara's "special sand"

4. Sasuke's Susanoo

5. Onoki's Rock Golem

What I think...

1. I'm not trying to say iit is impenetrable but, Madara's Susanoo is clearly the strongest in Shinobi history. Defense is not only about big walls, six swords and endless meteors can help too.

2. I am no Itachi troll, but his Susanoo uses kind of a technique that you don't see in Naruto. He uses a sword and shield. Not only that but he has the "Totsuke Blade" (and more) which is pretty fast, and plus it's ability to seal anyone away, it's pretty spectacular.

3. People underestimate Gaara. They say his sand would fail against Sasuke's Susanoo, but in fact if he uses his "special sand" not too many people could counter it. It not only has strength, but speed. He has also showed growth, the 2nd Mizukage called him the "Golden Child With No Eyebrows."

4. Sasuke Susanoo is still in growth but very powerful. He has even been able to stop Juubi Obito's attack. Yet people fail to realize the Susanoo holds a huge disadvantage, they are very slow. This doesn't really concern Madara and Itachi, for they have the defense and attack power to make up for that slowish speed. Sasuke however does not since, as I said earlier, that it is only a beginner.

5. Onoki's Rock Golem isn't the greatest of the bunch, but still powerful. there sn't really anything special about this defense. Onoki usually used it to counter Madara's techniques when it wasn't covered by Gaara's sand. The fact still remains though that he was still able to cancel out Madara's Jutsu. That is a feat of it's own.

All in all all these men have fine defenses! None in all of the shinobi world can compare! They truly are the greatest of all time!

I'd put the third or fourth Raikages defense above Onoki at least, other than that yeah I agree. The thirds I'd say possibly above even Itachi. He can tank a kyuubi mode rasenshuriken, that counts for a lot to me.

I think you mean Itachi has the Sword of Totsuka or if you prefer Sakegari Longsword. Also there is no evidence to think Madara's susanoo has a better defence than Itachi's + Yata's mirror.

If your entire argument to put Madara on #1 rests on meteors you can keep that argument since he didn't awaken Rinnegan shortly before his death after some experiments with Hashirama's DNA + his ability's got greatly enhanced by Kabuto before summoning him in his younger form. Therefor he's not the strongest shinobi in history.

Excluding Onoki it is a pretty good list.
What about Oro's roshomon
Kimmimaro's bones are as strong as steel
Neji has rotations
Hiruzen's mud wall is prabably every bit as good as Onoki's golem

The strongest is obviously Minato's S/T barrier not even the 10tails' TBB could do a thing to that defense.
and it's even better that you can redirect the attack.

I thought of that too but I don't know if we've seen yata mirror take ny powerful attacks to accurately judge it. Atleast with the third we have heard his feats, and got to witness him against one of the more powerful techniques we've v seen in the narutoverse. It's a real close call though
